competency based grading

grading focused on students learning certain things, typically includes resubmits to allow students multiple chances

specifications grading

grading assignments based on meeting a specific set of standards, or a specification. Typically each activity either meets or does not meet the specification and different term grades correspond to different amounts of work completed.

ungrading

an assessment framework built on metacognition rather than individual rating of assignments or activities in the course; students get feedback on work, but evaluation is in the form of reflection

contract based grading

setting up front, a contract that if students meet a certain set of requirements, they get a certain grade.

equity

dealing fairly and equally with all concerned, by meeting them where they are; a focus on outcome

equality

treating everyone the same, even if they are not starting in the same place; a focus on treatment

badging

a gamification strategy that is typically applied to specification grading where students earn and collect “badges” to recognize their achievments in the course
